Healthy Living

What is Healthy Living?

Healthy living refers to the practice of improving, maintaining and/or enhancing health and health behavior.  It means that we have the power, or the physical, mental and spiritual capacity to make choices about how we live our lives on a daily basis.

Healthy Living involves making the right choices that positively impact our health and wellness not only for today but for the future as well. We all potentially have the power to take the necessary steps and actions to achieve optimum health.

Eating right, staying physically active, enhancing emotional and spiritual wellness, and focusing on disease prevention are all part of creating a healthy lifestyle.  To achieve optimum health, all aspects of one’s self must be in harmony:

Physical Wellness is the ability to maintain a healthy quality of life that allows us to get the most out of our daily activities without undue fatigue or physical stress. Physical wellness promotes proper care of our bodies for optimal health and functioning. Overall physical wellness encourages the balance of physical activity, nutrition and mental well-being to keep our bodies in top condition. In becoming more conscious of our physical health, we are able to discover ways in we can change our behavior patterns that lead to a healthy lifestyle.

Emotional Wellness is more than just handling stress. It also involves being attentive to our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, whether positive or negative.  Emotional Wellness implies the ability to be aware of and accept our feelings, rather than deny them, have an optimistic approach to life, and enjoy life despite its occasional disappointments and frustrations. It also inspires self-awareness, self-care, the ability to manage stress and the ability to learn and grow from life experiences.

Mental Wellness refers to a way of life oriented toward optimal health and well-being in which body, mind, and spirit are integrated in a purposeful manner with a goal of living life more fully. Mental wellness should not be viewed as being completely separate from physical, emotional, and spiritual wellness. They all work together to create balance, overall wellness, and optimal health.

Spiritual Wellness is comprised of many parts that include our religious faith, beliefs, values, ethics, principles and morals. It enables us to find the inner calm and peace needed to get through whatever life experiences we encounter, whether good or bad.  Enhancing our spiritual wellness enables us to experience a higher level of meaningfulness and sense of peace and purpose.  Ultimately, spiritual wellness enables our mind, body and soul to be in harmony with each other, and enables us to survive and thrive with grace and consciousness.
